For all the longtime WMW members out there, you’ll know that DG has long had a fascination with words, their meanings and origins. Clearly, he is not the ONLY person in the world with such an interest, and now I’ve found another, who, frankly, interests me more.

So, if you read this DG, I’ve got a message for you - tits, or GTFO (follow the link, srsly. kthnx)

The law of unintended consequences

TallTroll | Everything Else | Friday, December 14th, 2007

Yo, any Facebook addicts out there? Thought so…

I wouldn’t normally DREAM of recommending an app, but this one is interesting

Socialmoth - It’s meant to be a gossip tool, I think, but it’s actually turning into a live version of Postsecret

General failure to understand…

TallTroll | Everything Else | Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

I’ve seen references in a couple of places to Googles alleged exposure to the mortgage crisis brewing in the US. Again, I am amused by the spectacle of otherwise intelligent individuals displaying a truly staggering lack of appreciation of how things work online.

Much handwringing is happening over the assumed crunch in advertising spend, and it’s possible impact on the online sector. Since advertising ALWAYS gets cut in a spending squeeze, that’s going to cut into G’s spectactular growth, right?

Peter reports there’s a meeting being organised in Manchester, on Sept. 14 / 15, 2007. Check it out.

How do you attract quality applicants for a geektastic job?

TallTroll | Everything Else | Thursday, June 28th, 2007

…. by screening the new Transformers movie :) The “joke” is, of course, that they want to employ “transformers”, those Page / Brin / Jobs / Gates like genii who can take a simple idea and turn it into a global behemoth of a business with a market valuation greater than some contintents.

Whilst it’s a bit of a generalisation to say that people who want to see the Transformers film are going to be geek types who might fit well with a San Fransisco tech start-up, dealing with cutting edge video search and discovery, I bet there’s a strong positive correlation…

Has LinkedIn totally crashed?

TallTroll | Everything Else | Thursday, May 31st, 2007

I can’t get anything at all from the site right now… HTTP viewer just times out etc. For fecks sake, the one day I actually want to DO something with the damn site…

That’s what you call a bad user experience, I guess - major loss of pointage, guys….

Has SMA-UK died the death?

TallTroll | Everything Else | Monday, April 23rd, 2007

MickG has spotted that the SMA-UK site now goes to the hosts holding page. Bizzarely, if you check their “About us” page, it lists all the associations they are affiliated to… including SMA-UK.

I guess that needs updating now.

Look out - here comes the Google affilate network

TallTroll | Everything Else | Monday, March 26th, 2007

It’s a US only beta for the moment, but Google are officially getting into the affiliate business. See the AdWords blog post, and the FAQ hereThreadwatch, via SEL.

SEOClass - the new wave conference scene keeps growing

TallTroll | Everything Else | Wednesday, March 14th, 2007

Another option in the sudden trend for small scale conferences providing training on search engine optimization has popped up - SEOClass. The line-up of core speakers is impressive too : Rae Hoffman, Todd Malicoat, Greg Niland and Michael Gray.

As I’ve noted before, finding trusted sources of quality information is hard. Whilst there’s loads of information out there, sorting the nuggets from the noise is hard work, especially for the newer members of the SEO community. When you get a chance to spend “quality time” with a well-known name, it can be like manna from heaven - good info, straight from the source.

Bernie Ebbers doing stir - the rise and fall of the modern CEO

TallTroll | Everything Else | Tuesday, March 6th, 2007

The ex-Worldcom CEO is finally starting a 25 stretch, following the US Supreme Courts’ rejection of his appeal (hat-tip to el Reg). For an older gentleman like Mr Ebbers, this is effectively a life sentence. The odds that he will ever again set foot outside of a prison as a free man are slim.

Since he was convicted of one of the larger frauds ever (that have come to light, at least…), and the effects of that fraud have severely impacted the lives of thousands of families, my sympathy is somewhat limited, but it does raise some interesting questions about how large companies are run. Mr Ebbers was a founder of what became WorldCom, and rode the massive rise in tech / telecomms stocks over his tenure to become CEO of a vast commercial concern.
